# Bee Anatomy: How Many Eyes, Wings, and Legs Does a Bee Have?
The questions people actually ask about bees turn out to be counting questions. How many eyes, how many wings, how many legs. They sound like trivia until you find out the answers, and then each one opens onto something genuinely odd about how a bee is built.
A bee has five eyes. It has four wings that most people count as two. And it carries a sting that is not a weapon the bee evolved from scratch, which explains why half the colony does not have one at all.
Direct answers first, then the whole body for anyone who wants it.
How many eyes does a bee have?
A honey bee has five eyes.
Two of them are the large compound eyes, one on each side of the head, which are the ones you notice. Each compound eye is built from over 6,500 separate facets, each pointing in a slightly different direction, which together give the bee a wide field of view covering front, sides, above, and below at once.
The other three are easy to miss. They are simple eyes called ocelli, arranged in a small triangle on top of the head, and they are not for seeing images at all.
The division of labor is the interesting part. The compound eyes handle movement and detail, and they track the position of the sun, which is central to how bees navigate. The ocelli read light intensity rather than shape, and they help the bee keep herself level and oriented in flight. One system tells her what is out there, the other tells her which way is up.
Drones have noticeably larger compound eyes than workers, so large that they nearly meet across the top of the head. Once you have seen it, it becomes the fastest way to pick a drone out on a frame.
How many wings does a bee have?
Four, arranged in two pairs.
Almost everyone says two, and the reason is a small piece of engineering. Each side of the bee carries a larger forewing and a smaller hindwing. In flight, a row of tiny hooks along the edge of the hindwing, called hamuli, latch onto a fold on the forewing and lock the two together, so each side beats as a single continuous surface.
That is why a flying bee appears to have one wing per side. At rest the hooks release and the wings separate again, which is when you can actually count all four.
The arrangement gives the bee the lift of a large wing in flight and the compactness of a small one when folded, which matters for an insect that has to squeeze between frames of comb.
How many legs do bees have?
Six, in three pairs, like every insect. The twist is that no two pairs do the same job.
The front legs carry a notched cleaner on each, sized precisely to the diameter of an antenna. A bee draws each antenna through the notch to strip off dust and pollen, which matters because her antennae are her main sense organs and a dirty one reads poorly.
The middle legs are the general purpose pair, and they do much of the work of moving pollen back along the body.
The hind legs of a worker carry the corbicula, better known as the pollen basket. It is a smooth concave area on the outer face of the leg, fringed with curved hairs that hold a packed pollen pellet in place, and a press joint further up compacts loose grains into a solid load. Queens and drones have no pollen baskets at all, because neither of them ever forages.
The three parts of a bee
Like all insects, a bee is built in three sections, and knowing which does what makes the rest of the anatomy easier to follow.
The head is the sensory and feeding end, carrying the eyes, antennae, tongue, and mandibles. The thorax is the engine room, where the wings and all six legs attach and where the flight muscles sit. The abdomen holds the digestive machinery, the glands, and, in females, the sting.
The head: antennae, tongue, and mandibles
The antennae are the bee’s most important sense organs, and they do far more than feel. They are densely packed with receptors for smell and touch, and they are how a bee reads the constant chemical conversation of the colony, from the queen’s pheromones to the scent of a nectar source another forager just visited.
The tongue is called the proboscis, and it works as a straw for drawing up nectar and water. Its length is not a trivial detail. Tongue length determines which flowers a bee can physically reach into, which is one reason different bee species specialize in different plants, and why some deep-throated flowers are worked by long-tongued bumblebees rather than honey bees.
The mandibles are the general purpose tools. Bees use them to work wax into comb, to groom, to carry debris out of the hive, and to grip when they need to.
The abdomen: honey crop, wax glands, and Nasonov
Three things in the abdomen are worth knowing about.

Wax glands sit on the underside of the abdomen in young workers, and secrete the small clear flakes that the bee then chews and shapes into comb. The Nasonov gland sits near the tip of the abdomen and releases a scent the bees use to mark home. You can watch them use it: bees standing at the entrance with abdomens raised and wings fanning are broadcasting that scent to guide others in. The sting, and why drones do not have one
This is the part of bee anatomy with the most elegant explanation behind it.
A bee’s sting is a modified ovipositor, the organ an insect uses to lay eggs. That single fact answers a question people ask constantly: only female bees can sting, because only females have the structure the sting evolved from. Drones are male, so they have nothing to sting with. A drone can be handled bare-handed with complete safety, which surprises people.
Among the females, the two castes differ sharply. A worker’s sting carries backward-pointing barbs, much like a fishhook. In the elastic skin of a mammal those barbs anchor so firmly that the sting tears away from her body when she pulls back, which kills her. The detached sting and its venom sac continue contracting on their own afterward, pumping venom for some time after the bee is gone.
That last detail has a practical consequence worth knowing if you keep bees. Scrape a sting out promptly with a fingernail or a hive tool rather than pinching it between your fingers, because pinching squeezes the sac and pushes more venom in. Speed matters more than technique.
A queen’s sting is smooth rather than barbed, so it slides free and she can use it repeatedly. In practice she almost never does, reserving it for the one situation it is really for, which is dispatching a rival queen.

How to tell the three castes apart
All of this anatomy becomes useful the moment you are looking at a frame and trying to work out what you are seeing.
Workers are the smallest and the ones you see in their thousands. They carry pollen baskets on the hind legs and a barbed sting.
