The first winter is the one that takes most beginner colonies. That is worth saying plainly, because it explains why experienced beekeepers get quietly serious in August while everyone else is still enjoying the summer.
The encouraging part is that almost everything that decides the outcome happens in autumn, months before the cold arrives. By January there is very little left to do except stay out of the way. This guide covers what your bees are actually doing inside that box all winter, the three things that determine whether they survive it, and how to read the hive in spring.
What bees do in winter
Honey bees do not hibernate. They stay awake and active all winter, which is exactly why they need so much stored food.
When temperatures drop, the colony forms a winter cluster: a dense ball of bees gathered around the queen. The bees inside it vibrate their flight muscles, essentially shivering, and that muscular effort is what heats the hive. The cluster holds roughly 90 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit at its core, warmer still if they are rearing brood, while the outer surface sits closer to 50 degrees. Bees rotate steadily between the warm middle and the chilly outer mantle, so no individual is left on the cold edge long enough to die there.
The bees doing this are not the same bees you saw in July. Winter bees are physiologically different, carrying fat bodies and living for months rather than the six weeks a summer forager gets. They are built specifically to run the colony’s furnace until spring.
All of that shivering burns honey, which is the entire reason a colony needs heavy stores. On mild days you may see bees leave briefly for cleansing flights, since they will not soil the inside of the hive. Otherwise they stay clustered, and every time you open the hive you let out heat they have to burn more honey to replace.
Winter is won in autumn
Three things decide whether a colony survives the cold: its mite load, its food stores, and the strength of its population going in. Almost everything else is detail.
Get those three right by October and the colony has a genuine chance even in a hard winter. Get them wrong and no amount of wrapping, insulating, or worrying in February will save it. Our hive management guide sets out the seasonal rhythm that leads into this.
Why varroa decides winter survival
Beginners tend to blame the cold. Most experienced beekeepers blame varroa, and the mechanism is worth understanding because it explains the timing.
Varroa mites feed on developing bees, and the damage lands hardest on the very bees that are being raised in late summer and early fall: the winter bees. A mite-damaged winter bee does not live the long months she is supposed to. So a colony can look populous and healthy in September, then dwindle steadily through the cold and be found dead or nearly empty in January, with honey still in the frames.

How much honey a colony needs
The honest answer is that it depends heavily on your climate, since a colony in Georgia burns far less fuel than one in Minnesota. As a rough guide:
- Warm southern climates: roughly 30 to 40 pounds of stored honey.
- Moderate middle of the country: roughly 60 to 80 pounds.
- Harsh northern winters: 90 to 100 pounds is not excessive.
Rather than opening the hive to count frames, beekeepers generally judge stores by hefting. Tilt the hive gently from the back and feel the weight. It takes a season to calibrate, but learning what a properly heavy hive feels like in October is one of the more useful skills you can pick up, and it costs the colony nothing.

Moisture, not cold, is what kills
Colonies survive remarkable cold. What they struggle to survive is being cold and wet at the same time.
The cluster continuously gives off warm, moist air. That air rises, hits the underside of a cold inner cover, condenses into water droplets, and rains straight back down onto the bees below. A soaked winter cluster chills and dies, and beekeepers who lose colonies to this often assume the temperature was the problem.
The fix is to give the moisture somewhere to go:
- A quilt box, which is a shallow box with a cloth floor and a few inches of pine shavings above it. Vapor passes up through the cloth, the shavings absorb it, and vent holes let it leave the hive.
- A moisture board placed above the inner cover, which does a similar job more simply.
- A small upper vent or upper entrance so damp air can escape rather than collecting.
- A slight forward tilt to the whole hive, so any condensation that does form runs down the front wall and out instead of dripping onto the cluster.
Keep the lower entrance reduced whatever else you do, and note that adding an upper entrance does not mean opening the bottom back up.
Wrapping, windbreaks, and mice
Wrapping a hive helps in genuinely cold climates and is unnecessary in mild ones, so take regional advice over national advice here. Where it does help, install hive wrap or insulation around the time of your first hard freeze. Wrapping too early can trap warmth and moisture while the bees are still active.
A windbreak behind the hive is the cheapest improvement available. A fence panel, a hay bale stack, or a hedge cuts the wind that strips heat off the hive all winter, and it costs nothing to arrange.
Then there is the problem nobody warns beginners about: mice. As the weather turns, mice look for a dry, warm cavity, and a beehive is ideal. Once inside they chew through comb and foul the hive, and a clustered colony in winter is in no position to evict them. Fit a mouse guard and reduce the entrance to its smallest setting as cold arrives. This matters even more if you insulate with natural materials, which mice find inviting on their own.
Through the winter: leave them closed
Once the cold sets in, the most useful thing you can do is very little.
Opening a hive in winter dumps the heat the cluster has spent honey generating, and it can break up the cluster at exactly the wrong moment. The common advice is to keep internal inspections to one or two across the entire winter, and ideally none at all.
You can learn plenty without lifting a lid. Heft the back of the hive to judge remaining stores. Watch for cleansing flights on the first mild day, which tell you bees are alive and active. Put an ear against the hive wall on a still day and you can often hear the cluster humming.

The first inspection of spring
Resist the first warm afternoon. Wait for a day that reaches at least 60 degrees and is calm, and then check the forecast before you commit, because the last mild day before a long cold stretch is the worst possible time to open a colony up.
Keep the first inspection restrained. You are confirming three things: that there is a laying queen, that some stores remain, and roughly how strong the cluster is. If you lost the colony
Most beekeepers lose a colony eventually, and a dead-out is worth reading rather than just clearing away. The evidence usually tells you what went wrong, which is what makes next winter different.
- Bees dead head-first down inside the cells, surrounded by empty comb, is the classic sign of starvation. They ran out of food and died reaching into cells for the last of it.
- A tight cluster of dead bees with capped honey still in the hive but on other frames points to isolation starvation. Food was present, but the cluster could not break formation to move to it during a long cold spell.
- A very small dwindled cluster, or an almost empty hive with stores left untouched, is the signature pattern of varroa. The population collapsed rather than starved.
- A wet interior with mould, staining, and soaked bees indicates a moisture failure, which points at ventilation for next year.
