# How to Build a Beehive: Plans, Wood, and Whether It Saves Money

Beekeeping and woodworking overlap more here than anywhere else in the hobby, and plenty of people arrive at their first hive wanting to make it rather than buy it. The instinct is a good one. A hive is a box, you own a saw, and the catalog prices look steep.

Two things are worth knowing before you cut anything. Building can save real money or can quietly cost you more than buying, depending on circumstances that have nothing to do with your woodworking. And there is a single rule that determines whether a homemade hive becomes a useful piece of equipment or an expensive nuisance you eventually replace.

This guide covers that rule, the honest economics, what wood to use, and which parts are worth making yourself.

The rule that decides everything: precision

Start here, because everything else is secondary.

The Langstroth system works for one reason: every part is built to the same measurements, so anything fits anything. That standardization rests on bee space, the gap of roughly 6.4 to 9.5 millimeters that bees will neither fill with comb nor seal with propolis. Every internal dimension of a hive exists to keep that gap correct around the frames.

Drift outside that window and the design stops working. Too tight and the bees glue the frames down with propolis, so every inspection becomes a wrestling match. Too loose and they build comb across the gap, joining frames to each other and to the walls, which turns a routine inspection into cutting your own hive apart.

The measurements that matter most are the box length, fixed at 19 7/8 inches so boxes stack and interchange, and the internal dimensions, about 18 3/8 by 14 3/4 inches for a ten-frame box. Name the cost of getting this wrong plainly, because it is larger than beginners expect. A box built to non-standard dimensions cannot swap frames with another beekeeper, cannot be used to make up five-frame nucs to sell or to replace a winter loss, and cannot take a standard replacement part when something breaks. You end up with a hive that only works with itself. Measure against the plan with a tape and a caliper rather than trusting a cut list and a good eye.

Does building actually save money?

Those savings are real if you already have what you need. The part that DIY guides tend to leave out is the other side of the ledger.

If you spend ten hours building a hive to save $30, you are paying yourself about three dollars an hour. That may be fine, since many people build because they enjoy building, and an evening in the workshop is not a cost. But it is worth being honest about which motivation you are acting on.

The harder trap is tools. If you need to buy a table saw or a dado set for the job, the cost per hive immediately overtakes the price of simply buying a finished one, and it keeps overtaking it until you have built several.

What wood to use

Pine is the default, and there is no shame in it. It is the cheapest option, available at any lumber yard, easy to cut and joint, and it is what a great many commercial boxes are made from. Painted and kept off the ground, pine boxes last for years.

Western red cedar is the upgrade. Its natural oils resist rot, warping, and insect damage, which is why it turns up in premium hives, and it can be left unpainted if you like the look. It costs noticeably more. Cypress sits in similar territory and is common in the southern US.

Then the safety rule, which matters more than any of the above. Never use pressure-treated or chemically treated lumber for any part of a hive. The preservatives that make treated wood resist rot are toxic, and you are building a home that a colony will live inside, walk over, and coat with propolis for years. This applies to the stand as much as the boxes if the bees can reach it.

One myth worth retiring while we are here: there is no good evidence that naturally aromatic hardwoods such as black walnut or mahogany harm honey bees. If you have walnut offcuts and want to use them, the concern is cost and workability rather than toxicity.

Build the boxes, buy the frames

Most experienced beekeepers land on the same split, and it holds up.

Boxes are where the savings are. They are simple shapes, the joinery is within reach of a competent amateur, and a box is mostly four pieces of wood and a rabbet.

Frames are a different proposition. They are inexpensive to buy, genuinely fiddly to make well, and they carry the precision that the entire system depends on, since frame spacing is what sets bee space in practice. Joinery and construction basics

This is not a full cut list, but the decisions worth making deliberately are short.

Box joints, sometimes called finger joints, are the strongest and are what commercial boxes use, because they give a lot of glue surface and resist the racking that comes from prying boxes apart year after year. A rabbet joint is a solid middle ground and much quicker to cut. Simple butt joints with exterior screws will hold if your cuts are square, though they are the first to loosen over time.

Whatever joint you choose, use glue and fasteners together rather than relying on one. Hives live outdoors, get pried apart with a steel bar, and carry eighty pounds of honey.

Cut a rabbet along the top inside edge of each box to create the frame rest, or fit a metal frame rest, since this is the ledge the frames hang from and it needs to sit at the right depth.

The most DIY-friendly hive is a top bar

If building is the appeal rather than the Langstroth specifically, there is an easier target.

A top bar hive is essentially a long box on legs with a lid and a row of bars across the top. Because there are no frames, there is no frame-spacing precision to hit, which removes the single most demanding requirement of building Langstroth equipment. It is also the cheapest hive to build by a wide margin, and the design tolerates a builder’s improvisation far better.

Where to get plans worth using

Extension programs, beekeeping clubs, and established beekeeping publishers all put out free hive plans, and a local club is often the fastest route to a plan that someone nearby has actually built from and can answer questions about.

The caution is worth stating. A lot of plans circulating online carry dimensions that do not match the standard, sometimes because they were adapted for a different country’s frame sizes and sometimes because they were simply drawn carelessly. A beautifully made box built to the wrong measurements is worse than no box at all, because you will not discover the problem until there are bees in it.

Before cutting, check any plan’s internal dimensions and frame rest depth against the standard figures. If they disagree, trust the standard.

When buying used beats building

Worth checking before you buy lumber.

Club auctions, and beekeepers leaving the hobby, regularly put woodenware on the market below the cost of the raw timber to build it, already cut to standard dimensions by a manufacturer. One caveat carries over from buying any used equipment. The boxes themselves are usually fine, but used comb from unknown colonies can carry disease spores that survive for years, so take the woodenware and be selective about frames and comb.
